3 Take your exams

When completing your GCSE English Language, you will need to pass both the written exams and the speaking endorsement. If you are completing an International GCSE with Edexcel IGCSE, you do not take a speaking exam.

GCSE and IGCSE

Written Exams

Format

For AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and Edexcel IGCSE, you will sit 2 written exam papers on separate days. The content of the papers will be different for each exam board. The duration of the tests will also vary by exam board (from 1 hour 30 to 2 hours 15) and must be taken in exam conditions. This means you must not confer with anyone else taking the exam and can only use certain equipment.

Process

Ahead of exam day, we’ll confirm the time, location, and full details of your GCSE English Language exams and exam centre, so you know exactly what to expect. Please make sure you understand the exam rules in advance to help everything run as smoothly as possible. You’ll then attend the exam in person at your allocated centre on the scheduled date, alongside candidates nationwide.

Speaking Endorsement

Format

For the speaking component, you will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of your choice, and answer questions from the audience. This should last a maximum of 10 minutes. Our English Language course contains expert guidance on how to ace your speaking exam, including how to plan and present a structured presentation, as well as tips on delivery.

Process

Your date for the speaking endorsement will usually be arranged directly with the exam centre. If you provide evidence that you have previously completed this component, we can carry this grade over to be used in your resit. Your results will be reportedly separately to your written grades, but completion is required to earn the full GCSE qualification with AQA, Edexcel, and OCR exam boards.

GCSE English Language Exam FAQs

Can I resit English GCSE exams?

Yes, you can retake English GCSE exams if you did not achieve the grade you needed at school. Lots of higher education qualifications and job sectors require you to have a minimum of a grade 4, or C, at GCSE or equivalent in English language. You can achieve this by confirming your GCSE English exam booking with Pass GCSE or MME Exams. To resit in English, speak to one of our team members today.

Can I take an online GCSE English language resit exam?

You cannot take an online GCSE English exam to resit in English, this must be done at a local exam centre. You can however take a GCSE English equivalency exam or functional skills English level 2 exam online, which are both equivalent to a full GCSE English Language qualification.

If you are wanting to resit GCSE English online, then the we recommend Pass Functional Skills for your functional skills English level 2 exam, or A star equivalency for your GCSE English equivalency exam.

How does the speaking component work?

For AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, the speaking endorsement is an individual presentation that you must give to an audience, followed by a question and answer section. In total, it should last no more than 10 minutes.

The exact examination criteria varies between exam board, but in general you should aim to use English effectively, be audible, intelligible, and use appropriate language for the formal setting.

The date for your speaking endorsement will be arranged by your exam centre. Your result will not affect the grade of your written components, but it is necessary to pass it in order to earn the full GCSE qualification.

When can I resit English Language GCSE?
