3 Sit your exam
Before your exam, we’ll send you full details of your GCSE French (Edexcel IGCSE) tests, including the exam time, location, and what you’ll need to bring on the day, so you can prepare with confidence. We recommend reviewing the exam regulations in advance to help avoid any issues. You’ll sit the exam in person at your allocated exam centre, alongside other candidates across the UK.

4 Receive your results
GCSE results are released on the national results day, which usually takes place on the third Thursday in August for exams sat in the summer. On this day, grades are issued across all subjects and exam boards.
As you’ll be sitting GCSE French as a private candidate, your results will typically be issued by your exam centre directly. It’s important to check in advance how your centre provides results, as some require collection in person, while others send results by email or post.

GCSE French Exam Information - Edexcel IGCSE (4FR1)
Paper 1 - Listening (4FR1/01)
Topics
Listening comprehension across a range of everyday and contemporary topics.
Themes include personal life, education and work, social activities, travel and the wider world.
Format
Seven tasks based on recorded texts, each heard twice.
A mixture of multiple-choice, multiple-matching, note-taking and gap-fill questions.
Paper 2 - Reading and Writing (4FR1/02)
Topics
Reading comprehension and written communication across a range of everyday topics.
Students demonstrate understanding of written texts and the ability to write clearly in French.
Format
Section A (Reading): five tasks using a mix of question types including multiple-choice, short-answer and gap-fill.
Section B (Writing): one 60-75 word task, one 130-150 word task (choose 1 of 3) plus a grammar-based task.
Paper 3 - Speaking (4FR1/03)
Topics
Spoken communication across everyday topics such as personal life, education, social activities and the wider world.
Students demonstrate their ability to discuss and respond to questions in French.
Format
Task A: picture-based discussion (2-3 minutes) with five question types.
Tasks B and C: two spontaneous conversations (3-3m 30s each) on two different random topics, with no pause between B and C.

Where will I sit my GCSE French private exam?

This GCSE French qualification is sat with Edexcel International GCSE (IGCSE). This means you can take your exam in the November exam series as well as in summer.
Will I need to complete any coursework?
No, sitting GCSE French as a GCSE private candidate through Pass GCSE means that your qualification does not include any coursework components. Your grade is based entirely on your 3 exams.
How many GCSE French exams will I need to sit?
You will sit 2 written exam papers, and 1 speaking exam as part of the Edexcel IGCSE French qualification.
What is a Fast-Track GCSE French qualification?
