How does the GCSE exam process work?

GCSE resit exams for maths and English language are available in the summer and November each year, and you’ll take the exam at a local exam centre. It’s open to external candidates aged 16 and over, and we’ll handle all the exam arrangements for you. Resits for all other subjects take place in summer only. You can book GCSE exam as an external candidate through Pass GCSE.

You will get an invoice emailed to you immediately after registration to confirm the booking.

The Pass GCSE exams team will contact you with further information and guidance via email or phone, and will arrange everything for you. We will book you in to the closest GCSE exam centre for private candidates to you, where you will be registered as a GCSE private candidate.

3 Take your exam
We will confirm the time, location and details of your exam so that you are set up and feel confident ahead of the exam day. Make sure to understand the rules of your exam before your exam day to ensure everything goes as smooth as possible. You will then need to make your way to the exam centre on the exam dates, to take your exam in-person alongside the rest of the country.

4 Receive your results
GCSE results day takes place on a fixed date each year, usually the third Thursday in August, when results are released nationally across all subjects and exam boards.
As you’re a GCSE private candidate, your results will usually be issued directly by your exam centre on this day. It’s important to check how your centre delivers results because some require collection in person, while others provide them by email or post.
