Adult GCSE Exams
What are Adult GCSE Exams?
Adult GCSE exams are the same exams as those sat in schools by students in Years 10 and 11. However, you can take GCSEs at any age, whether or not you are enrolled in a school or formal education setting. GCSEs are nationally set exams which take place in the May/June exam period every year. The exams are sat in person at registered exam centres, and adults can take them if signed up as a private candidate. The tests themselves are typically written exams, although some subjects include coursework that must be completed throughout the year.
You can take a GCSE in many subjects. One subject might be split into several papers which are each sat individually, on separate days. The exact content of the test paper that you will sit depends on the exam board that has made the exam paper. Everyone that sits that GCSE subject with that exam board will answer the same questions, and the results are moderated nationwide.
How Adult GCSE Exams Can Help You
Achieving your GCSEs increases your general employability, and can allow you to progress in a specific field such as midwifery or education. The most commonly required subjects for career progression are maths, English, and science. This is because success in these qualifications requires the development and demonstration of key skills which can be transferred in future roles. Careers which require you to have a selection of GCSEs of grade 4/C or above include nursing, teaching, and policing.
Some adults may take GCSEs for the reasons above – to progress with a certain career – whereas others might be looking to move onto a further education course. Universities and apprenticeships may require applicants to have passing GCSE grades in maths and English in order to be considered.
GCSEs can also be a great personal challenge or a development of an existing interest. Taking adult GCSE exams is a great opportunity to increase self-confidence, and many take the exams for personal development.

Options for GCSE Subjects
The subjects you should take for your adult GCSE exams depends on what you need them for. If you are using these qualifications for a journey in self-growth, choose something that you have an existing interest in. You will get more out of the course and exam if there is existing curiosity there.
For employability in general, having a GCSE or equivalent in both maths and English language is a massive advantage. These are also specifically required subjects for entry into many careers such as nursing and social work. Maths is sought after as a completed GCSE as it shows that you have sufficient numeracy skills that are needed in many roles. English Language qualifications similarly prove that you have the level of communication needed.
Completing any GCSE requires hard work, the ability to learn new things, and appropriate application of understanding. These are all skills that transfer over to the workplace. Completing your GCSEs shows employers that you can employ these skills, and therefore increases your chances of success in job applications.
